What is Root Canal Therapy?

Root Canal Therapy in AustinRoot canal therapy is performed to save a tooth with an infection in the root canal, which is the pulp-filled depression in the root of a tooth. After the nerve and pulp are removed, the inside of the tooth is cleaned and filled with a natural polymer.

Once teeth have emerged from the gums, the nerve is not vital to the health of the tooth. Its function is sensory, recognizing hot and cold temperatures, and its absence will not affect the function of the tooth. Saving a tooth with root canal therapy helps maintain normal chewing function and keeps adjacent teeth from shifting or bone loss from occurring.

After root canal therapy has been completed, it may be necessary to place a crown over the tooth for protection. A crown is used when a tooth is heavily damaged, or to protect a tooth that will become dry and fragile over time without moisture provided by a root.

Why Does Tooth Pulp Need to Be Removed?

Damaged nerve tissue or pulp will break down allowing bacteria to grow within the pulp chamber. This bacteria and any decayed debris trapped in the chamber can cause an infection. An infected root can lead to abscesses and bone loss around the tip of the root as well as swelling in face and neck.
