Inlays are used to fill large cavities.

Drs. Lori and John Babnieau have over 20 years of experience in the inlay/onlay restorative procedure and have also advanced their education at the prestigious LVI Global institute.

Onlays and inlays are two of Dr. Lori Babineau’s favorite procedures because it is a conservative approach that preserves the tooth’s surface. She reports that her patients love this method of saving their natural teeth.

Repairing large cavities

Onlays and inlays are both used to repair large cavities. An inlay fits within the grooves between the cusps of your teeth at the center of the tooth’s surface.

An onlay is used when damage to the tooth structure is more extensive. It fits within the grooves but wraps up and over the cusps covering more of the tooth’s surface. Because of their extensive coverage, dental onlays are sometimes referred to as “partial crowns.” Although, unlike crowns, onlays don’t require that the tooth be shaved, making this a more conservative approach.

Replacing almagam fillings

Onlays and inlays made from porcelain do not increase in size so they don’t crack your teeth. They are also match your natural teeth and allow for more conservative repairs that don’t need a crown to cover the entire tooth.
